It's asking you to close the installer itself.

Well..there's something funny there. And I don't mean what the others are saying. Yes, the .net 3.5 sp1 installer is running and the popup says that it can't continue unless the installer is closed. The funnier thing is that not only is it asking for the installer to be stopped in order to proceed, if you look at the titlebar of the popup, it's actually asking for itself to be stopped so that it can proceed. The popup is saying it needs to stop the popup so it can continue (Since the offending program and the text on the titlebar of the popup are the same).

I'm not gonna try this right now, but did you manage to "achieve" this by launching two installers of .net 3.5 sp1 at the same time?

The .net installer is asking to close itself! Is this something you concocted Joe?

:) This was NOT a made up screen shot. This was a real installation.

I had started and anceled the installer (forgot to run as admin).

Just ignoring the message resulted in a sucessful SP1 update.

I encountered this situation a few weeks ago when installing on Windows Server 2003 (2 servers)... As you point out Joe, I just chose to ignore it and the installation completed.

How many times did the installer get launched? Guessing you have two instances. (Clicking t(w)o many times. ;)

I am pretty sure you have a web page with the title Microsoft .Net framework 3.5 SP1 setup open.

I remember, even when I tried installing Sp1 without closing the 2 instances of devenv,i got a window with 3 erros msgs. 2 msgs related to devenv and i think third is same as above... but after closing 2 devenv instances...it started installing but it took a lot of time to complete..not sure what is going on behind the scenes..

Yes this is a real screenshot and i got it when installing SP1. It took me a few seconds for it to register that i needed to click "ignore", there were no other applications open.

Maybe the process from a previous run was still hiding somewhere in there? I've had this with a few apps before.

It Could be An Application tread for Microsoft Visual Studios open or an actual .net application is open.
