For the NETOOP project we need to decide whether to use Codeplex or “Self Host”.
Codeplex ROCKS and provides Version Control, Bug Management, Release Management, Issue Tracker, Stats, etc.
You can read the FAQ here http://codeplex.codeplex.com/Wiki/View.aspx?title=CodePlex%20FAQ
If this were “just” an Open Source ASP.NET application this would be a no brainer for me – USE CODEPLEX.
But, since this is a “learning exercise” as much as an Open Source effort I want to ask.
Another consideration is that it’s easy for a customer to set up a nee CodePlex project but for a Microsoft employee to do it I need to go through a management review, and a legal review
So, Should we Codeplex or SelfHost ?
Please take the poll here. http://twtpoll.com/c6r8k8

Was there supposed to be a link somewhere?
A bit of a dilema. I was going to say Codeplex but your comments about the learning nature of the project is relevant. Would there be an issue with a) someone else setting up a Codeplex project or b) someone setting up a project site elsewhere?
Mike
Oops – thanks Mike I added the link.
If we self host I would set up the relevant applications either here on msjoe.com or on NETOOP.com
RE: NETOOP – Codeplex or Self Host ?
For the NETOOP project we need to decide whether to use Codeplex or “Self Host”. Codeplex ROCKS and provides
Please keep separate from Codeplex, as there is lot of garbage there it become very congested and some time very difficult to find right stuff from Codeplex
Very soon I am going to put some code/development/design/css at Netoop.com from my sample download application at http://www.gadhiasiraj.com/…/Download.aspx and other development
Thanks for launching netoop, please keep it clean and easy to find/search
I think CodePlex is the best option, for sure the project is going to grown and this platform is ideal for manage different kinds of projects, of course CodePlex is a gateway for other developers that may get interest in NETOOP.
Codeplex seems the correct location for a project of this nature. I suggest we get someone else to create the project.
Codeplex is right location for this kind of project. It is easy to access for those developers they don’t know about it and wants to participate.
Use codeplex. Write a disclaimer
Hi folks, I’m from Brazil and I was planning to do something about web portals in my college final project, it would be based in the ASP.NET MVC Framework and made from the scretch, I think joining in the NETOOP project would bring me some ideas and I could help the NETOOP project in some way. But I work all day and at night I’m in the college, so I wouldn’t have much time, anyway I’m gonna join it, maybe I can contribute a little in the weekends.
One imposition that I am making is that the code will be Web Form based. Sorry
Don’t matter, I’m looking for knowledge… MY project is gonna be MVC, but I guess that the domain logic don’t have much to do with WebForms or MVC thing. But anyway… Thinking better I’m not capable of working with you, my english is not good enough and I’m very begginer, but it’ll be nice to follow the work! Good luck!
And about the topic, I think both would be good. Codeplex rock, but a self host gives the project and identity, what’s nice. Can’t it have a very simple site with some few sections and the code stuff in the codeplex? Just an idea.
i vote for self host
Go for self host.
CodePlex is good for the experienced developer but for beginners
it’s not much of a learning experience I think you should go the route that gives you the most control to keep it a valuable
learning experience
Why the imposition of not using the MVC Framework ?
Codeplex is the right place to put it. "D.R.Y." …?
Hello Joe,
I would vote for Codeplex. Trying to self-manage the functionality necessary to handle/manage the project will distract from the foundational goals of the project. While I understand there are business and legal issues regarding you setting up a Codeplex project, I would point out that other fellow MS colleagues participate in “outside group” Codeplex projects setup by non-MS Colleagues.
Regards….
Glad you plan to use web forms! An interesting project.
Just add the url to Codeplex, but the project stays independent.
codeplex host is better in my opinion, most developers like go codeplex to see what is new, what is interesting… …
Host there can let more people know NETOOP
I think use CodePlex. If its a learning exercise then I think it is safe to say that a lot of the developers wont have experienced checking files into codeplex and using it from the admin side.
(Side note – when I pressed tab from Website comment field it took me right up to the top logo/title instead of dropping me into the comments box – think your tabindex is a out of order?)
Codeplex
And i can setup the project if u want joe.. I wont need to go thou reviews and such..
I vote Codeplex, it seems like it goes hand in hand for what we are doing.
I think we should go for codeplex, as there are many features which will make the management easier coz there will be a lot of people working on it.
Self Host is a better choice and is more comfortable to work with .
If setting up in a self-host environment allows for the same conveniences/tools as codeplex would it maybe a better scenario if parallel projects will be run (webforms vs. MVC)
This would allow for a single site devoted to one project in multiple forms and more intricate communication between the parallel projects.
Maybe a centralized communications area for discussing the major components of the overall project and how they are implemented differently in webforms vs. MVC
What is wrong with self hosting the project ?
Self hosting will give us more control and it will be a great learning experience
I will still prefer self host.
